Spared by the bombs of the 20th century, Prague has kept a medieval centre of rare coherence, where Gothic and baroque answer each other above the Vltava. To wander the Czech capital is to cross a thousand years of history under the gaze of its blackened statues and countless spires — all in a romantic atmosphere, especially in the early morning when mist rises from the river.

Two days are enough to see the essentials, and the budget stays gentle compared to Western Europe. Here's our itinerary — find the visits on our what to do in Prague page.

Day 1 — The royal bank: Prague Castle & Charles Bridge

Climb up to Prague Castle, the largest castle complex in the world, which has overlooked the city since the 9th century. At its heart, St Vitus Cathedral raises its dizzying Gothic spires. Come back down through the steep lanes of Malá Strana to the famous Charles Bridge, lined with thirty baroque statues, which you cross among the painters and street musicians.

Arrive early on the bridge: at sunrise, when the crowd is still asleep, the place looks like a painting. It's one of the most beautiful moments the city offers.

Castle & tours of Prague

Castle tickets, guided tours of the old town and Vltava cruises.

Day 2 — The old town & the astronomical clock

Head to the Old Town and its cobbled square, one of the most beautiful in Europe. On every hour, the astronomical clock on the town hall — a medieval masterpiece from 1410 — comes to life: the twelve apostles parade before the crowd. Then lose yourself in the Jewish quarter (Josefov) and its history-laden synagogues.

End with a cruise on the Vltava or a tasting of Czech beer, among the best and cheapest in the world. In Prague, pivo is serious business — and a simple pleasure.
