There's no bad season for Europe — only seasons that match, or don't, what you're after. The right time depends on three things: the weather you can handle, your tolerance for crowds, and your budget. Here's an honest overview to choose the right moment.
The golden rule, if you only remember one thing: the shoulder seasons (April-June and September-October) are almost always the best choice. Pleasant climate, thinner crowds, gentler prices — the winning trio.
Spring (April-June): the best compromise
It's the ideal season for most cities. Temperatures are mild, terraces reopen, gardens bloom and the summer crowd isn't there yet. Perfect for southern Europe before the heat — Rome, Seville, Barcelona — as well as the northern capitals. One caveat: avoid the May bank holidays, very busy.
Summer (July-August): guaranteed sun, assured crowds
Summer means long days and a festive vibe, but also intense heat and peak crowds. In the south (Athens, Seville, Rome), the thermometer often tops 35°C: favour early-morning visits. To escape the heatwave, head north — Amsterdam, London, the Scandinavian capitals — where summer is mild and bright.
Autumn (September-October): the connoisseurs' season
Many seasoned travellers swear by autumn. The light is magnificent, the summer heat drops, prices fall and the crowds thin. It's a perfect time for Florence, Venice or Porto, when the cities regain a more authentic rhythm.
Winter (November-March): deserted cities and Christmas markets
Winter has two faces. In December, the Christmas markets turn Vienna, Prague or Budapest into fairy-tale settings. The rest of winter, quieter and rainier, is ideal to visit the great museums without the crowds and enjoy rock-bottom prices — Paris and Madrid in winter have huge charm.
In short: which season for which city?
- South (Spain, Italy, Greece, Portugal): spring and autumn — avoid July-August.
- North and west (France, Netherlands, UK): pleasant from May to October.
- Central Europe (Prague, Vienna, Budapest): superb in shoulder season, magical in December.
